Hard Drive Parts

Part Description and

Relevance for Repair

What parts do I need to match to have any chance of recovering data off my failed hard drive? In this section we will cover an example of a hard disk drive label and PCB information to learn what is required to match hard drive parts for hard drive repair. Do you think the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) is bad on your hard drive and you would like to try and replace parts on the electronics? What information and components do you need to replace to make a compatible PCB? Remember not all hard drives of the same model were manufactured in the same country! The same model hard drive can me made in China, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia etc so country can sometimes play a part in finding compatible parts for your failed hard drive

EXAMPLE 1: Matching Donor Western Digital

Hard Drive Parts for a WD Passport

Containing:

Model: WD10TMVW-11ZSMS4 (ROM) PCB: 771761-XXX MCU: M 88i9146-TFJ2

This particular drive has a USB interfaced Printed Circuit

Board

To match an identical USB PCB you would need to confirm that the bar code sticker located on the back matches the first set of numbers 771761 then transfer the unique ROM chip (U12) 11ZSMS4 to the new board. To match parts for head replacement I would match the model and ROM numbers as these models can produce more or less heads reading in a different order. BUT WAIT! In my experience when head replacement is required the USB interface prevents proper ATA command access and it is highly recommended to replace the USB PCB with a compatible SATA PCB. To do this you need to find a matching SATA PCB with the same MCU numbers 88i9146-TFJ2 with aligning spindle motor contacts. In this case the matching SATA PCB is 771692 from a Western Digital WD3200BPVT-00HXZT1. You would also need to transfer the unique ROM chip (U12) 11ZSMS4 to the new Printed circuit board for this board to be a match. Now you will have a better chance of cloning the failed hard drive but the data will be unreadable, since the USB interfaced printed circuit board has a chip JMS538S dedicated to the algorithm in which the data is translated. This is when more sophisticated equipment such as Ace Labs PC3000 that contains a library of algorithms that can translate the data.

Questions?

Would you like to know how to quickly diagnose the condition of your hard drives for resale? Would you like to use my service as your own discrete data recovery engineer? Would you like a one on one personal data recovery experience with the technician recovering your data?
Hitachi Laptop Hard Drive parts Model: HGST HDD: Z5K500-500 PCB: 0J24297 DA5258A TYPE: TT5SAE500 To match a compatible PCB you would need to confirm that the Bar-code sticker located on the back matches the first two rows of numbers 0J24297 DA5258A then transfer the unique ROM chip 8 Pin Chip to the new Printed circuit board. To match parts for head replacement I would match the Model Number HDD: Z5K500-500 and Type SAE500 These drive can be problematic after a head replacement. They will initialize to come ready but show zero size or not be recognized at all but in most cases the loading of a loader will have this drive cloning in no time.
