SYSTEM AREA REPAIR

System Area Repair, communication repair between the electronics and the platters of the hard drive located in tracks minus zero
This can range from translator repair to the repair of common defect lists

Below is an example of a Maxtor hard drive and what the structure of a system area consists of:

MAXTOR SYSTEM AREA DIAGNOSTIC REPORT INFORMATION

One of the most common drives with system area problems was the Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 8 or N40P
First sign of Problems would be the computers boot process halting at Primary Hard Drive failure & the Last Character of the Drive would be Z

The drive would sometimes be recognized as an N40P and will not display a serial Number

After Repairs to this area is made the drive would display the correct Serial number
Then it Should be fixed, try cloning it.

Question
Do I have to repair all failed modules?

Answer
No, they are number in importance. The ones marked as level 4 priority are not necessary in all cases needed for the recovery of the drive.

You notice g list and p list etc have a 1 next to them. They must be recovered for the drive to work at all. [4] are usually not necessary.

The reason the drive thought is was 20gb is because we loaded a working SA into memory for an Identical chipset and it recovered and repaired that module as such. That is why I took a chance with your identical 40gb drive even though the CPU was not identical. But i looked at the size of the g list of the good drive and the crc of the good drive against the bad they both matched so i figured it would work.

So did the p list identical from the good to the bad in size and crc and header info.

Which were 18?

G-list was 1B

That is why when you sent me the list and the only Fails is saw were all marked 4, I looked else where because failures in those modules would not cause the drive to be unrecoverable.

Please: Evaluate this site Before attempting any form of self data recovery or hard drive repair

What is the problem?

Does the hard drive spin?
If so does it click?
Does the armature kick out?
Do the hard drives heads vibrate to initiate?
Is there an odd smell to the drive?
If it doesn't spin do you here a slight or faint ticking sound?
Does the BIOS see the hard drive?
Does the BIOS see the hard drive as the correct model?
Are there funny characters showing on boot?
Does the operating system blue screen?

Important things you should be aware of before you do anything to a suspected failed hard drive

Static discharge will kill a hard drive when handling... especially the internal components
Dust will destroy your data... DO NOT OPEN! In my experience I see so many hard drives destroyed by helpful neighbors when the problem was not situated internal of the hard drive assembly. Just because it clicks doesn't always represent an internal failure.

Swapping the electronics runs the risk of further damage, especially if the revision number of the PCB is different.
You will have a greater success of data recovery with less risk if the original electronics is repaired.
