MATCHING DONOR WESTERN DIGITAL HARD DRIVE PARTS:

Example:

Western Digital MDL: WD2000BB-16DWA0

MDL: WD2000BB
This indicates the Model Number of the Drive and Memory Cache
BB Meaning 2MB there are also JB for 8MB and so on... this needs to be the same if you are ordering parts.

Firmware
Firmware: 16DWA0
This is reference to the hard drives firmware number, this can be used for a PCB Swap but if unsuccessful you will need to physically replace the Firmware chip from the original drives PCB to the Board. See Pick 3

Head Replacement

DCM: CVJAA
This is very important when replacing the internal read write heads of a drive. The last 5 digits of the DCM number will need to match the original drive for compatible heads, But most importantly I have found that you can match this DCM number across several models e.g. WD200BB and WD200JB will Work... this is also the same between the silver top WD and  Black top WD will still be compatible. I have also had the odd drive that is larger than the drive I needed with the same DCM and more heads than what I need but I found the extra heads where deactivated and still worked.

COUNTRY: Malaysia
People are not always aware of the fact that same model drives can be made in different country's and this can also be a factor in sourcing donor hard drive parts

PCB Replacement
PCB: (Printed Circuit Board)
You will need to match the first two sets of numbers printed on the IDE Insert of the PCB This will match the compatibility of the PCB with your drive
If you can match these sets of numbers to the hard drive Firmware number then you will have a high chance of a compatible part.
Of course if this does not work there are more complicated means that the data recovery experts can do.

HARD DRIVE PARTS
What parts do I need to match to have any chance of recovering data off my failed hard drive?

In this section we will cover the hard disk drive label & HDD base  information for the  appropriate numbers required to match hard drive parts for most model: This will eventually  include all models for desktop hard drive repair & laptop hard drive repair
So far I have covered
Western Digital Hard Drive Parts, Maxtor Hard Drive Parts, Samsung Hard Drive Parts
Toshiba laptop hard drive parts

HARD DRIVE PARTS INFORMATION
Thousands of drives but what matches your hard drives failed components
its like looking for a needle in a haystack

Remember not all hard drives of the same model were manufactured in the same country!
The same model hard drive can me made in China, Singapore, Thailand so Country can sometimes play a part in finding compatible parts for your failed hard drive

Do you think the Electronics are bad on your drive & you would like to try and replaceing parts on the hard disk?
What information do you need to replace a compatible PCB

Do it yourself hard drive repair & the risks

Please: Evaluate this site Before attempting any form of self data recovery or hard drive repair

What is the problem?

Does the hard drive spin?
If so does it click?
Does the armature kick out?
Do the hard drives heads vibrate to initiate?
Is there an odd smell to the drive?
If it doesn't spin do you here a slight or faint ticking sound?
Does the BIOS see the hard drive?
Does the BIOS see the hard drive as the correct model?
Are there funny characters showing on boot?
Does the operating system blue screen?

Important things you should be aware of before you do anything to a suspected failed hard drive

Static discharge will kill a hard drive when handling... especially the internal components
Dust will destroy your data... DO NOT OPEN! In my experience I see so many hard drives destroyed by helpful neighbors when the problem was not situated internal of the hard drive assembly. Just because it clicks doesn't always represent an internal failure.

Swapping the electronics runs the risk of further damage, especially if the revision number of the PCB is different.
You will have a greater success of data recovery with less risk if the original electronics is repaired.

MATCHING MAXTOR DONOR HARD DRIVE PARTS

PCB
When it comes to Match Hard Drive Parts for the PCB I Match the 5 Digit Code printed on the sticker located on the PCB by the IDE Pins e.g. M8FYB

Matching Replacement hard drive HEADS
For compatible read write heads I match the CODE e.g. YAR 41XW0
X Represents any Character
I also match the first & last digits from the four letter code KMCD
Followed by the three letter Alphabetic Code AAA

I have also had great success using heads from other model drive i.e. Maxtor DiamondMax Plus II SATA Heads working in a DiamondMax Plus 9's and vice versa using the Above Method

MODEL Numbers
The Actual Model number of the Maxtor Hard drive is the number above the longest bar code e.g. 6Y120P0XXXXXX
Once again X represents any character

Remember if you have a slim line Fireball or a DiamondMax plus 8 these have a very common Fault in the System Area of the hard drive and No Parts are necessary for repair but you do need a Professional Company with 15000 USD worth of Equipment to deal with this problem.

Jammed or stuck Seagate Spindle Motor Parts

Normally I Match the model number with the Country for a compatible base we have great success with hard drive platter transfers..  which took many hours to resolve as alignment is critical!
Warning this is one of the most difficult platter swaps especially if the there are dividers between the platters Remember the spindle motor to the base of the hard drive assembly is mounted to the base, You have no choice other  than removing the platters and transferring them to a good function hard drive assembly

Clicking Seagate 2.5 Inch Laptop  and 3.5 Inch Desktop Hard drive Parts
When it comes to matching parts for read write heads its as simple as matching the model number along with the Firmware version

Samsung 2.5 Laptop  and 3.5 Inch Desktop Hard drive Parts for heads replacement
Match The 5 digit code after the part number on both the desktop hard drive and the laptop hard drive Demonstrated in the pictures below

2.5 Samsung Laptop Hard Drive

3.5 Samsung Desktop Hard Drive
